Project Highlights

SCOPE OF WORK

Installation of EV Charge points at the The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhampsted, Hertfordshire, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations and maintaining a tranquil environment for patients and visitors. Our turnkey approach included careful planning, civil ground works, and HDD trenchless drilling to minimise disruption and maintain a peaceful environment. Given the requirement to navigate through critical areas such as the busy main entrance and gardens, careful planning was imperative to achieve a successful, low-impact installation.

UTILITY DETECTION

The project began with a detailed survey, utilising remote technology and online resources to study geological information and to locate existing underground utilities.

INITIATE DRILLING

With all checks successfully completed, the EPS specialist horizontal drilling rig was set in position looking ahead at the 50-metre distance to the exit pit.

PROGRESSION AND PRECISION

When the drilling process commenced, our operator carefully added solid rods to the drill, assuring the precision of our predetermined trajectory. This process is crucial to accurately follow the route we’ve set, ensuring a seamless underground installation.

CONTROLLED NAVIGATION

A specialised scanner guides the drill head at approximately 2 meters below the surface, providing us with essential data on its position and direction. This allows for real-time adjustments, keeping the drill process precisely on course.

SUCCESSFUL ARRIVAL

The drill head emerges at the exit pit, marking a successful completion of the 50-metre drilling phase. It’s now primed for the attachment of the ducting, initiating the back-reaming process.

SUCCESSFUL RETRACTION

The drill is fully retracted, presenting multiple cable ducts that are attached to the drill head. This determines the successful completion of our well-orchestrated drilling operation that has saved multiple days open cut trenching, which would cause major disturbance and closure of the main entrance.

INFRASTRUCTURE PREPARATION

The main supply cable and EV chargepoint circuits are in place, nestled securely in a concrete bed. They stand ready for the next step: installing the GRP enclosure and the new fuse board. This setup not only supports the immediate project but also accommodates potential expansion with additional chargepoints in the future.

ACCURATE ALIGNMENT

With five pre-fabricated 100kg concrete bases in position, each destined to hold an EV chargepoint pedestal. Using these bases allowed us to perfectly level and align each chargepoint. The incorporated ducting between each base ensures a future-proof solution. It offers the flexibility to replace cables easily should the need arise, guaranteeing a long-lasting installation.

PROJECT COMPLETION

The pedestals and lamp post lighting take their place and the trench backfilling begins, bringing the project to completion.

Outcome and Conclusion

The strategic use of HDD drilling ensured the main service installation process was unobtrusive and completed in one day keeping disturbances to hospice operations at a minimum. The underground installation preserved the hospice’s tranquil landscape, maintaining the comforting environment for residents and guests. The new EV charging facilities efficiently cater to the needs of visitors and staff, showcasing the hospice’s commitment to sustainability and convenience
